Engineering Beyond the Classroom

Engineering makes more sense when you can see it move, measure it, program it and build with it.

That idea sits behind MIIX — the Mahanakorn Institute of Innovation, an engineering and technology facility designed to bring practical experimentation closer to the student experience.

Completed in July 2021, MIIX was developed as an environment where theoretical knowledge could move into experimentation, hands-on practice and eventually real engineering applications. The facility represented an investment of more than THB 180 million in laboratories, equipment and learning environments focused on technology and innovation.

One Building, Multiple Engineering Systems

MIIX brings together laboratories covering several areas of modern engineering rather than focusing on a single discipline.

Facilities associated with the building include:

The university continues to list many of these facilities as part of its current engineering and technology learning environment, including Robotics, Embedded & AI, Advanced Electronics, automation, PLC and 3D printing facilities.

What makes that combination useful is the connection between them.

A student working on an automated system may need mechanical hardware, sensors, electronics, software and industrial control at the same time.

A prototype might begin as a digital design, become a physical part through 3D printing, and later be integrated with electronics or automation.

MIIX creates an environment where those technologies can be explored as parts of larger systems rather than isolated subjects.

From Industrial Robots to Advanced Electronics

The Robotics Lab has included industrial robotic arms from manufacturers such as ABB, KUKA and Yaskawa, giving students exposure to equipment used in industrial automation.

The Advanced Electronics Lab supports more specialised measurement and analysis, including high-frequency electrical signals, electromagnetic interference and wireless communication signals.

Meanwhile, the Embedded and AI Lab brings together measurement equipment, development tools and applications connected with industrial technology, giving students an environment for testing, analysing and developing new systems.

There is also a Process Control and Automation Lab, described in later university materials as an RO-water mini factory used to demonstrate process automation and industrial control in a working system.

These are different technologies, but they increasingly meet in the same industries.

Modern factories need robotics and automation.

Connected machines depend on embedded systems.

AI increasingly works alongside sensors and physical equipment.

Electronics connect the digital world with real machines.

Why MIIX Matters for Students

The value of a laboratory is not simply the equipment inside it.

It is what students can learn by working around real systems.

MIIX was developed around a progression from experiment to experience to expertise — allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge, test ideas and build practical capability through hands-on work.

That approach is especially important in engineering because real systems rarely behave exactly like diagrams.

Components need to work together.

Measurements need to be interpreted.

Designs need to be tested.

Problems appear that were not obvious at the beginning.

Working through that process is where engineering starts becoming more than a subject.
